Brief information about the project
„Sprachräume – Büchereien für Integration“

By initiating the project „Sprachräume – Büchereien für Integration”, the Rhenisch Protestant Church, along with the Department for Libraries (Büchereifachstelle) and several selected protestant libraries, have started a pilot project which classifies libraries as a central location for the promotion of reading and speaking capabilities, intercultural encounter and multimedia-based learning processes. Further cooperation partners include the Protestant Migration and Refugee Work Bonn (Evangelische Migrations- und Flüchtlingsarbeit Bonn - EMFA), the Bonn Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Learning (Bonner Institut für Migrationsforschung und Interkulturelles Lernen e.V. - BIM) and the Protestant Adult Education Rhineland-South (Evangelischen Erwachsenenbildung Rheinland-Süd e.V.).

In the first instance, diverse means to facilitate and support the integration of immigrants will be allocated in five sample libraries. These means include:

  • Acquisition of additional books and media, dealing with topics of interest for refugees/immigrants: text- and picture books, dictionaries, multilingual books, books that are easy to read, books about Germany
  • Training and assignment of voluntary reading mentors, who accompany and support the language acquisition of third-country nationals
  • Allocation of computer workplaces including a printer and access to digital language courses
  • Organisation of events to promote intercultural encounter
  • Networking of local institutions and stakeholders, associated with refugee – and integration work

The experience deriving from the work in our sample libraries will be collected and evaluated in order to be applied to several other voluntarily managed libraries.

Sample Libraries:

  • Protestant Public Library Aegidienberg
  • Public Library Bad Sobernheim
  • Protestant Public Library Leun-Biskirchen
  • Protestant Public Library at the Matthäikirche Bonn
  • Protestant Public Library Neuss-Erfttal

You can check the link “Berichte” on our website for further developments regarding the project.

This project is co-financed by funds generated from the Asylum-, Migration- and Integration pool.
